How High Should You Cut Grass in an Iowa Summer?

Most struggling lawns we are called out to look at in July are not sick. They are scalped. Cutting height is the cheapest lever a homeowner has, and it is the one most often set wrong.

Higher is better once the heat arrives

For the cool-season grasses that dominate Cedar Valley lawns, a summer cutting height around three to four inches is the range to aim for. Taller grass shades its own soil, which keeps root-zone temperatures down and slows evaporation. It also outcompetes crabgrass, which needs light at the soil surface to germinate.

A lawn cut at two inches in August is asking for exactly the problems people then try to fix with more water and more product.

The one-third rule

Never remove more than a third of the blade in a single cut. If your lawn is at six inches and you want it at three, that is two visits, not one. Cutting deeper than a third in one pass shocks the plant, and the clippings left behind are long enough to mat and smother what is underneath.

This is also the honest reason a neglected yard costs more for a first visit: it is genuinely more work, sometimes more than one pass.

Sharp blades matter more than people think

A dull blade tears rather than cuts. Torn tips brown off within a day or two and give the whole lawn a grey cast that no amount of watering fixes. If your lawn looks slightly off-color the day after mowing, look closely at the tips of a few blades before blaming anything else.

Let the clippings fall

Mulching clippings back into the lawn returns nitrogen and moisture to the soil. Clippings do not cause thatch. Bagging every week throws away free fertilizer and adds a disposal problem. We mulch by default for exactly this reason, and only bag when there is a specific reason to.

During a dry spell

When growth slows in a dry August, mow less often rather than lower. Cutting a drought-stressed lawn on the same weekly rhythm as June does damage the lawn cannot repair until temperatures drop. Our recurring customers get their schedule adjusted when conditions call for it, without having to ask.
