When to Start Mowing in the Cedar Valley

Every spring the same question lands in our inbox: the snow is gone, the grass is turning green, so is it time to mow? The calendar is the wrong thing to look at. In the Cedar Valley the first cut usually falls somewhere between mid-April and early May, but the range is wide enough that the date on its own tells you nothing.

Watch the grass, not the calendar

Cool-season grasses like the Kentucky bluegrass and fescue mixes common around Cedar Falls and Waterloo start growing in earnest once soil temperatures hold above roughly 55 degrees. That is soil temperature, not air temperature, and soil lags well behind a warm afternoon. A single 70 degree day in March means very little.

The practical test: when your lawn has reached about four inches and looks like it is actively growing rather than just greening up, it is ready.

Why cutting too early sets you back

An early cut on a lawn that has not started growing does two things you do not want. It removes leaf area the plant needs to rebuild the root reserves it spent over winter, and it puts equipment on soil that is often still saturated from snowmelt. Wet soil compacts under the weight of a mower, and compacted soil is noticeably harder to fix than a shaggy April lawn.

If you can leave a footprint in the yard that stays visible, the ground is too wet to mow.

Set the deck high for the first cut

Take the first cut at the top of your mower’s range, then work down over the next two or three visits. Removing more than a third of the blade height in one pass stresses the plant, and a stressed lawn in April is a thin lawn in July.
